In 1756, after three centuries of animosity, France and Austria became allies. To consolidate this diplomatic reconciliation, Louis XV and Empress Maria Theresa decided to marry their respective children. The project came to fruition approximately 12 years later with the marriage of the Duke of Berry, Dauphin of France, aged 15, to Marie-Antoinette, Archduchess of Austria, aged 14. The celebrations got underway on 16 and 17 May, 1770 in Versailles. - source

The image below is titled, "Illumination en réjouissance du mariage de Louis Auguste Dauphin de France avec l'Archiduchesse Marie-Antoinette soeur de l'Empereur" which means "Illumination in celebration of the marriage of Louis Auguste Dauphin of France with the Archduchess Marie-Antoinette sister of the Emperor"

Or may be this is the 1742 view of the illuminations of the Bell-Isle Hotel in Frankfurt on the Mein. The truth is probably irrelevant at this point. But nevertheless... the image below is titled, "Vue de l'illumination faite par son excellence monseigneur le maréchal duc de Belleisle ambassadeur extraordinaire et plenipotentiaire du Roy en Allemagne, pour accompagner la façade de son Hotel, executé le 12 février 1742 à l'occasion du Couronnement de sa Majesté impériale à Francfort" which means, "View of the illumination made by His Excellency the Marshal Duke of Belle-Isle Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the King in Germany, to accompany the facade of his Hotel, executed on February 12, 1742 on the occasion of the Coronation of His Imperial Majesty in Frankfurt"

But quite possibly it was the 1742 view of the building of light which was in front of the palace of his Excellency Monsignor the Marshal Duke of Belle-Isle. The below image is titled, "Veue de l'edifice de lumiere qui êtoit en face du palais de Son Excellence Mgr le mareschal duc de Belle-Isle, Chevalier des Ordres du Roy et de la Toison d'Or Ambassadeur extraordinaire et Plenipotentiaire en Allemagne, Gravé à Paris au mois d'Aoust 1742" which means "From the edifice of light facing the palace of His Excellency the Mareschal Duke of Belle Isle, Knight of the Orders of the King and the Golden Fleece Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Germany, engraved in Paris in the month of 'Aoust 1742"

Rather, let's take a look at the images depicting the said illumination. Quite remarkable, considering the year was 1756, or may be it was 1742... What could be the source of those lights?

And the super question: why did somebody have to alter the last black and white image?

In the first image the Coat of Arms, and "Carolus Septimus Semper Augustus" were erased, along with half of the participants and carriages.

Carolus Septimus Semper Augustus is Charles VII, the Holy Roman Emperor (1697 - 1745)

The Coat of Arms erased in the first image is our standard double-headed eagle.

Basically, while I am primarily interested in the source of light, the falsification of history part is also quite remarkable.

The double headed buzzard I've heard it refered to as. That's definately the good guy cause it's been pretty much erased from the modern world.

Yeah the idea of aristocratic france with modern electricity is really cool to think about.

While I somewhat understand why the Coat of Arms and Latin sentence was erased, I'm struggling to figure out why we are missing people and carriages.

Could be, or may be there is something in their attire, or accessories we are not supposed to see. Hard to say at this point.
