52 BC Battle of Alesia by Melchior Feselen

The Battle of Alesia or Siege of Alesia was a military engagement in the Gallic Wars that took place in September, 52 BC, around the Gallic oppidum (fortified settlement) of Alesia, a major center of the Mandubii tribe. It was fought by the army of Julius Caesar against a confederation of Gallic tribes united under the leadership of Vercingetorix of the Arverni.

It was the last major engagement between Gauls and Romans, and is considered one of Caesar's greatest military achievements and a classic example of siege warfare and investment; the Roman army built dual lines of fortifications - an inner wall to keep the besieged Gauls in, and an outer wall to keep the Gallic relief force out. The Battle of Alesia marked the end of Gallic independence in modern day territory of France and Belgium.

Everything weird! It's incredible how these artists are trying to tell us a story we no longer understand.

It seems that the Romans with the double-eagle are dressed as knights and soldiers of the epoch of the artist. But the Gauls are dressed partly as ancient Romans/Byzantines and partly as Turks or with oriental fashion in any case, they have Frankish fleur-de-lis (or so it seems) and also a sun, a moon and a Moor's head. Everyone seems to be blonde and European. The "Gauls" are definitely messed up and make no sense at all. They are a weird combination of ancient Romans, Byzantines, Franks and Turks/Moors... and they are blonde! NONSENSE

Also congratulations for the quality of all these pictures.

Priceless... lol
  • It is very unlikely that the "old" Charlemagne was crowned King of Neustria at Noyon in the 8th century. These terms appear around 1590.
