Well, presumably, it was done this way so it could be sifted for relics and whatnot.

You can see them dumping each basket in the trolley cart at the top of the stairs.

Archeological dig vs industrial mining.

Man that's deep! And yet they find fossils and dinosaur bones just a few feet down. Maybe the city of Ur came before the dinosaurs?

The excavation of the ancient city of Ur led by archaeologist C. Leonard Woolley in Tell al-Muqayyar, Iraq in 1934.

Why are there so many people heading in and out?

There are some funny looking characters in there, those two at the bottom especially...also seems to be a victorian house with 2 intact chimney pots at the back left there.... :)
